Box Mod 101
What is a box mod?
Before buying a box mod, you have to know what a box mod is first. A box mod is a power source which houses one or more rechargeable batteries to power an atomizer. Their name comes from their box-like shape. Compared with other vape devices such as vape pens and pod systems, box mods usually come with a larger battery which lasts much longer.
How does a box mod work?
Almost all box mods have a fire button. By pressing it, the coil inside a separate atomizer is heated, vaporizing the e-liquid in the wick and producing clouds for the user to inhale. Release it and the power will be cut off.
Types of Box Mods
There are many different types of box mods available on the market today. Based on their features and functions, box mods can be divided into regulated box mods and unregulated box mods.
Regulated Box Mod
A regulated box mod uses a circuitry and a processor to control current drawn from a battery. It allows vapers to adjust values like the wattage or voltage delivered to the atomizer. This kind of mod typically has a display screen showing all the relevant info about the settings and functions currently in use, such as power settings, atomizer resistance, and battery life.
Temperature control, Variable wattage, and voltage are the most common features that can be found in regulated box mods now. More advanced chipsets even support functions like voice-command recognition, pre-heating, boost mode, and power curves. Regulated box mods have safety features for safer vaping too and many will accept software upgrades.
Unregulated Box Mod
An unregulated box mod is a mod that houses one or more batteries and delivers raw current to the atomizer. The only control is a fire button, which completes the circuit between the batteries and the atomizer. No wattage, voltage adjustment or reverse polarity protection can be found in an unregulated box mod and there is no limitation of control of the current either.
Unregulated box mods may come in a variety of forms, such as squonk mods or mech mods. Due to the lack of protection features, unregulated box mods are supposed to be used only by experienced vapers who have a better understanding of Ohm's law and battery safety rules.
Advantages of Box Mods
Although they are large in size, a number of vapers prefer box mods over other kinds of vape devices because box mods provide several features that other vape devices cannot.
First of all, box mods usually enjoy a longer battery life. Box mods usually have more internal space than vape pens and pod systems, which means they can accept more batteries. More batteries allow for higher wattage capability and longer battery life.
In addition, a better cloud production is also a positive feature. Compared with other vape devices such as vape pens and pod systems, box mods can produce much more clouds per hit because of their increased wattage and performance. Many sub-ohm box mods today can reach a maximum wattage of 300, producing clouds which can fill a room in only one or two hits. Not just for cloud chasers, box mods are also perfect for those who prefer better control over how much cloud is produced from every hit.
Finally, better control. Many of the regulated box mods are equipped with sophisticated circuit boards which allow users to manage a large number of settings to make their device more suitable for them. Some advanced box mods even enable users to know exactly what their specific vaping preference is so that they can set their box mods to provide an ideal hit.
Which type of box mod should I choose?
Now that you know what box mods are and how they work, it should be easier to make a decision on which type of box mod is right for you.
From my point of view, if you are a beginner and don't have a deep understanding of how unregulated box mods work and how current and resistances work, you'd better not use them. After you've done some research and learned about battery safety, current, resistance, and Ohm's law, then an unregulated box mod is a viable option.
